Plasti Dip: A Decent Product, or Not?


ProsThe biggest advantage of Plasti Dip over regular paint is how affordable it is. Compared to decent-quality car paint, it’s almost three times cheaper. So, if you’re on a tight budget and still want to update your vehicle’s exterior, this could be it. Now, to make it last really long, I recommend adding at least a couple of nice, thick coats. That way, you’ll be able to mask all the tiny imperfections that even the most expensive paint doesn’t always hide.

And, when you decide to remove it, all those extra layers will make it a lot easier. Peeling off a dense layer is always less troublesome than a thinner one. On top of that, Plasti Dip requires very little preparation. Obviously, you’ll need to clean the car with a wet cloth (preferably with soap) and dry it, but that’s pretty much it. The color doesn’t look very good on your steel horse? Just scrape it off, and add a new layer!

Another big pro: if Plasti Dip gets scratched or peeled off, fixing it won’t take much time or effort to fix that.


Plasti Dip is not a perfect coating, of course, and does have a couple of cons. First of all, it’s available in a rather limited number of colors. True, it includes all the major ones, but if you’re looking for a unique color mix, that won’t be possible with Plasti Dip. The company does have the Create Your Color kit in its lineup for creating custom colors; yet, it’s not that sophisticated.

Furthermore, while it looks decent on pretty much any car, this product still doesn’t have that “expensive” shine to it. Durability can be an issue as well; on the bright side, since it’s very easy to fix, I wouldn’t call that a very big problem. Oh, and do, keep in mind that this coating is sensitive to humidity and temperature extremes.

Applying Plasti Dip

Next, it doesn’t lose the original brightness and protective properties over time, which happens with many cheap paints. Now, if you’re a bit old-school and prefer brushing, make sure the surface is clean and dry. I would recommend avoiding strong winds, abnormal humidity, and direct UV lights (the sun). Stir the solution thoroughly to get the desired consistency. Then, dilute it with whatever mixture you prefer (it could be naphtha, for example).

I always go for thick coats. Now, with Plasti Dip, it’s important to keep the back-and-forth movements to a minimum. As for spraying, I’d also recommend doing it under a roof to avoid sun rays. A garage will be great for this. Shake the can nice and hard for 30-40 seconds and keep shaking it while you’re applying it. Don’t hold the canister too close to the surface (keep it five to ten inches away).

It doesn’t really matter whether you’re brushing or coating. Let the first layer “sit” for at least 30 minutes before applying the second coat. On average, I’d recommend adding three to four coats for that “luxury” effect. And what about the Plasti Dip dry time before driving?

When will you be able to hit the road after coating the vehicle? The minimum dry time is four hours, according to the company’s official statement. This has proven to be true in real-world tests as well. The best thing to do here would be to apply Plasti Dip in the evening and let it dry overnight. Another important question: how long does this coating last? If you take proper care of Plasti (never leave it under the sun/rain and drive carefully), it will serve for up to 3 years.

That’s quite alright, considering how cheap it is and how little time and effort it takes to spray/brush the formula.
